5 New Hampshire Hikes for the Family

5 New Hampshire Hikes for the Family

New Hampshire is criminally underrated. The White Mountains pack big-scenery hiking into trails short enough for kids, with waterfalls, summit views, and granite cliffs that make even toddlers say 'whoa'.

Here are 5 family-friendly New Hampshire hikes — all under 4 miles, all worth the drive.

1. Diana's Baths, North Conway

An easy 1.4-mile round trip on a flat path leads to a series of cascading waterfalls and natural rock slides. Bring a swimsuit in summer — the pools are perfect for splashing around.

2. Mount Willard, Crawford Notch

1.6 miles up an old carriage road to one of the best summit views in the Whites — and you barely have to work for it. Kids 5+ can handle it comfortably, and the cliff-edge view at the top will blow their minds.

3. Lonesome Lake, Franconia Notch

A 3-mile loop with around 1,000 feet of elevation gain to a stunning alpine lake with views of the Franconia Ridge. There's a hut at the top where you can rest and refill water. Excellent for ages 7+.

4. Sabbaday Falls, Kancamagus Highway

Half a mile, mostly flat, ends at a dramatic three-tier waterfall in a narrow rocky gorge. Perfect for very young kids or grandparents. Combine with a Kancamagus scenic drive for a full afternoon.

5. Mount Pemigewasset (Indian Head), Lincoln

A 3.6-mile out-and-back that rewards effort with a wide-open summit ledge overlooking the Franconia Ridge and Franconia Notch. The last quarter mile is the steepest part — pack snacks.

  • Best season: late June through early October
  • All hikes have free parking or small day-use fees ($5–$10)
  • Bring bug spray in June/July, layers in September/October
  • Pack out everything — these trails stay beautiful because hikers respect them
Don't wait until your kids are teenagers to start hiking with them. New Hampshire is the perfect training ground — short trails, big rewards, and memories that stick.
